Strategic Estates Review and Transformation

The Project

The University Hospitals of Northamptonshire NHS Group were looking to deliver savings and efficiencies related to the development of greater collaboration across their suite of Estates and Facilities Services. These services include Estates and Facilities, Hotel Services, Sterile Services, Medical Devices, Portering, Capital Projects and Sustainability. 


Location: Kettering, Northampton

Client: The University Hospitals of Northamptonshire NHS Group: Northampton General Hospital NHS Trust (NGH) and Kettering General Hospital Foundation Trust (KGH) 

Electrolite's Role:

Delivery partner, project management & programme delivery, client representation, strategic analyst, subject matter expert.

The Challenge

 



The project sought to address a range of challenges experienced by the University Hospitals of Northamptonshire NHS Group, including;


  • Balancing limited resources with the need to increase delivery and harness innovation
  • Staff retention and recruitment
  • Optimising contractual relationships to gain strategic partners
  • Implementing effective clinical information systems
  • Optimising patient and staff safety
  • Redeveloping and enhancing environments – especially with an aged estate
  • Reaching carbon reduction targets through improved sustainability, efficient technology and the reduction of food waste.

Our Approach: Phase 1

Over a six-week period, Electrolite undertook a three-step strategic review across all workstreams. 


Step 1

  • Initial review of Model Hospital and Eric Data
  • Site visits and Stakeholder interviews to review models at each trust site
  • Group / Collaborative Model Driver Workshops.

Step 2

  • Identification of key savings opportunities through harnessing synergies and benchmarking data against best practice within similar sized trusts
  • Assessment of combined benefits
  • Development of Collaborative / Group model.

Step 3

  • Development of benefits realisation plan
  • Roadmap for delivery produced and transformation plan delivered to trust board
  • Identification of a suite of projects to contribute to the Trust’s CIP/FIP targets, representing 10 % of the overall Estates and Facilities budget over a 2-year period.  

Our Approach: Phase 2

Electrolite acted as a delivery partner to support NGH and KGH to implement the Collaborative/ Group Model projects and achieve agreed efficiency targets across key service categories.


Category 1 

  • Implementation of collaborative approach / group structure across services
  • Development of Single Systems where required
  • Enhanced procurement strategy and vested approach to contract management to ensure most cost-effective service delivery.

Category 2 

  • Standardised service delivery across all sites – development of SLAs for all services including: patient feeding, domestics, EBME and Estates and Facilities.

Category 3 

Reviewed Options for Services that could be provided more effectively on a single site or with a single management structure, focussing on:

  • Catering Production – economies of scale, maximising assets. 
  • SSD – staffing efficiencies, space release, cost reduction from PPMs.
