Hillingdon Hospital: New Modular Ward Building Commissioning

The Project

The Hillingdon Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust had a need to increase bed capacity at the Pield Heath site as part of the decant strategy in preparation for their HIP2 redevelopment programme. An area of land within the hospital grounds was identified that could accommodate two new 3 floor modular buildings, to be named by the Trust as Seacole and Jubilee.

Client: The Hillingdon Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust

Location: Uxbridge, Greater London

Electrolite's Role:

Project Management, Procurement Support, Commissioning

Completed: 2022

Our Approach

The Trust engaged 2 separate contractors to deliver the neighbouring projects. Seacole was designed to accommodate a 28 bed Elderly care ward, a 16 bed ICU and a 26 bed Respiratory unit. Jubilee was designed to house a 24 bed Stroke ward, 20 bed Neuro-rehabilitation ward and a 24 bed Paediatric ward, which had the added complexity of needing to be re-connected to an existing clinical building on the site and re-commissioned as a 6 bed Paediatric day care unit.

Electrolite were selected by the Trust for this project based on our previous experience and proven track record on similar projects within the NHS and we played an integral part in the Decant Strategy to prepare the hospital for the new development. Our team worked with the design and build contractors on behalf of the hospital to deliver the overall project and the commissioning of both buildings once completed.

We formed close relationships with Senior Management, Clinical, Operations and Estates & Facilities teams at Hillingdon, successfully managing and delivering the wards ready for occupation. Clinical needs and patient pathways were prioritised and accommodated for alongside the relevant HBNs.

Part of the brief given to the team was to generate  a  full equipment schedule for both the ICU and the Respiratory unit. Our team engaged with suppliers on the Trust’s behalf to obtain all the necessary information, managed meetings with the clinical teams to discuss requirements,  organised  demonstrations and built equipment quotations. We secured best pricing and managed the process from approvals and ordering to installation and commissioning.

We also facilitated all of the ward moves; liaising with clinical and operational teams, which involved careful planning due to the acuity of some of the units relocating.
